The biggest and most representative example of the unique Saxon fortified churches can be found in Prajmar, a village close to Brasov.

Together with six other similar churches (such as Biertan, shown here), as a recognition of the unique architectural style applied, it was recently included on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

The fortifications were originally built during the 13th century by the Order of Teuton Knights. One of the unique features of the fortifications is that each family had its own house within the walls, which was allowed to be used only in times of danger and only by the owners.

The church features one of the oldest surviving altars in Transylvania (from the 15th century).
