Sibiu is the ’capital’ of the Saxon region and was one of the biggest and wealthiest medieval cities in Transylvania.

The well-preserved medieval old town, the Saxon Lutheran Church built in the 14th century as well as the Brukenthal palace displaying a rich art collection make Sibiu one of Transylvania’s most visited tourist destinations.

Its cultural importance is reflected also by its status of Europe’s Cultural Capital for the year 2007 (jointly with Luxemburg, from where the Saxons inhabiting Sibiu during the Middle Age originated).
