Kalotaszeg (the ‘Kalota corner’, Kalota (Calata in Romanian) being the name of a small river) is a region formed by several villages and small towns west of Cluj, famous for it’s still alive folk art – especially the richly decorated woodcarvings, pottery and homespun are worth exploring.

Also not to miss are the medieval churches with wonderfully painted ceilings.

In Izvoru Crisului, the biggest village situated 35 km west of Cluj, there are several craftsmen’s shops offering local folk art products; it’s also possible to visit a traditionally outfitted house.
